Why You Should Use an Email IP Blacklist Monitor

Email IP Blacklist Monitor

What is an Email IP Blacklist

An Email IP Blacklist is a list of IP addresses that have been identified as sources of spam, viruses or malicious activity. If an email is sent from an address on the list, it’s blocked and won’t get through to its intended recipient. This helps to protect users from receiving unwanted emails and helps maintain the integrity of a company’s email infrastructure. So unless you want your emails bouncing around like pinballs, keep off the email IP blacklist! Unfortunately, many innocent senders have been wrongfully added to these lists – so you need to check to be sure yours isn’t one of them.

Email IP Blacklist Monitor

An Email IP Blacklist Monitor is a powerful tool to help protect your email reputation and keep your messages out of spam filters. It monitors your IP address against lists of known bad senders, which can include spammers, viruses, phishing scams, and other malicious actors on the web. If your IP address appears on one of these lists, the monitor will alert you so that you can take action to get it removed. With an Email IP Blacklist Monitor, you can rest assured that your messages will arrive where they’re supposed to and won’t be blocked by spam filters! So, what are you waiting for? Get your email reputation in check and start using an Email IP Blacklist Monitor.

What email IP Blacklists Should I Care About?

When it comes to managing your email, IP blacklists are no joke. They can cause major issues with deliverability and ultimately prevent important messages from reaching their intended recipients. But which blacklists should you be aware of and care about? Here’s a quick guide to the most widely used email IP blacklists that you should watch out for.

Spamhaus Block List

First up is the Spamhaus Blocklist. This is one of the most widely used blacklists and it tracks IP addresses that are known for sending malicious emails or spam. It also includes some domains that are associated with those IPs, making it a great resource for blocking unwanted traffic. If your email server is listed on this blacklist, it could mean that emails sent from your IP address are being blocked by mail servers.

Composite Blocking List

The Composite Blocking List (CBL) is a database of IPs maintained by Spamhaus that identifies and blocks malicious behavior, including but not limited to bots sending out spam emails, dictionary attacks, and open proxies. In other words – all the sketchy stuff you don’t want going on in your online space.

XBL Exploits Block List

The XBL essentially is comprised of hijacked IP addresses, many of which are linked to PCs rather than servers. But the possibility of your server’s IP ending up in the XBL cannot be ignored if a PC connected to it is hacked or if your server is used as a spam gateway.

Spamcop

Spamcop uses spamtraps and spam reports to calculate a reputation score for your IP address. If the score drops too low, your IP will be blacklisted – and that’s no laughing matter! To prevent false positives, they weigh up the number of complaints against any positive points you may have, but if it gets to the point where your IP is listed, chances are you’ve got some serious security-related issues to address.

Passive Spam Block List

The Passive Spam Block List does not use the typical testing and grading methods that other blacklists use, but instead rely on spamtraps. If you send emails from your IP address to one of these spamtrap email addresses it will be blacklisted.

Invaluement

Invaluement runs a trio of lists: ivmURI (domain-based), ivmSIP (ip-based) and ivmSIP/24 (network-based). The ip-based blacklist, ivmSIP, is specifically designed to target IPs with a high spam ratio. So if your server appears on this list, it’s time to sound the alarm! The network-based blacklist, ivmSIP/24, is intended for snowshoe spammers who spread their emails over a wide range of IPs. While Invaluement does its best to minimize false positives, if your server has unsavory neighbors then you might find your IP in this list.

Barracuda

A number of web hosting systems like cPanel have this list by default. Most IP addresses are included in the Barracuda Reputation System’s register based on the amount of spam they sent out. These include honeypots, spamtraps and other related systems which Barracuda use to identify spammers.

SenderScore

If your SenderScore drops below 85 in Return Path’s sender reputation system, it could spell trouble. ESPs, corporate email systems, email marketing services and more use this score to determine whether or not to block or route your emails to the spam folder. No one will bar you from sending emails directly based on your SenderScore, but it can certainly impact your delivery. So, watch that score closely!
